As a teacher, I am happy if my students remember just one thing that I taught them, especially if it leads to a change they implement into their daily routine. In addition to my cooking classes and chef’s table at @lacocinaquecanta @rancholapuerta this week as guest chef, I gave a well attended lecture on Spices and Health. One of the many topics I covered included the fact that curcumin, the active anti-inflammatory compound in turmeric, is much better absorbed (up to 2000%!) when combined with black pepper, which contains piperine. How satisfying to see so many fellow guests grinding black pepper into their turmeric anti-inflammatory shots every morning following my lecture! 🙏🏼 Truly a thrill to have my own restaurant - for one night! It was a pleasure to cook a vegetable-forward Moroccan chef’s table featuring recipes from my cookbook, Spicebox Kitchen @lacocinaquecanta @rancholapuerta last night in collaboration with Chef Vivian Mercado @is__vivs and the fun and fabulous support of Isaak @isaak.lm and Aarón @romanarce15 and Dora. And to our guests, I am so, so pleased that you enjoyed your meal with such enthusiasm and were interested in learning about culinary medicine. I can’t think of a better way to share my passion and purpose. Muchas gracias! Salud! Beyond my wildest dreams! Enjoying my first time as Guest Chef at @lacocinaquecanta @rancholapuerta this week! What an incredible farm and kitchen and I so appreciated the support of Chef Vivian Mercado @is__vivs and staff today. And my students made great food! We substituted some ingredients for what we harvested from the farm, including pineapple guavas, mustard grill, carrot tops, and more. More to come! Thanks everyone for coming to tonight’s Thrive Kitchen at Home, the last class for 2025. Oh my lunch is so good, had to share: I had a lot of fun talking about Thanksgiving food with @sfchronicle @sfchronicle_food - my favorite holiday. I didn’t realize it was in print! The cherry on top is that they used a headshot taken by my daughter, which seems very appropriate for a family holiday. As some of you may know, I was a National Kale Day ambassador with @drewramseymd way back! I have created and taught many kale salads since then (including the how and why of massaging kale at my supperclub last night!) Last weekend, I had the distinct honor of being the keynote speaker at the new Nutritional Sciences Teaching Kitchen at the Helen Diller Anchor House at University of California, Berkeley. If you know my work as a physician/chef/cooking teacher/champion of culinary medicine, you know how fulfilling it was for me to teach in a space created to train future dietitians and scientists in how to translate nutrition science to the plate, for the health of people and the planet.... My first recipe for @foodandwine !
